The size of Longan ranges from an olive to a small plum and spherical to ovoid in shape. The skin is rough-to-prickly but easy to remove and it covers the grayish-white translucent pulp. In the center of the juicy flesh is a large smooth jet-black seed with a white ovoid characteristic mark. The flavor is sweet and described as a blend of musk, spruce, and gardenia.
You can peel and pit and Longan just as lychees or pitted cherries to make dessert soups, smoothies, fruit salads, cocktails, and sweet-and-sour dishes. It pairs well with Asian fruits and mushrooms.
Store Longans in a plastic bag in the fridge to keep for 5-7 days.
